~ Hair Conditioning 101…

As I talked in my ~ Hair Coloring 101… post, conditioning the hair is of utmost importance. Deep conditioning treatments are essential, especially when it comes to chemically treated hair.

A deep conditioning treatment adds moisture back into hair, which helps your mane to become stronger, healthier and shinier. Ideally, it’s suggested to deep condition 1 to 2 times a week as it adds nutrition back into the hair, but in today’s busy world, once would suffice. Deep conditioning is not only using hair masks etc. but also oiling it. I usually wash my hair 2-3 times a week (as I have oily hair) and try to atleast deep condition it 2 of those 3 times either by oiling it (my go-to choice) over night or putting on hair mask after shampooing (on days I want to pamper myself more than usual).

For our Indian hair, Vatika has some good options available at your local Indian grocery store. Here in the pix below I am sharing some options that are available at the various Indian stores around Houston. You can also buy these online on Amazon, though pricey (Deep Conditioning Masks Amazon).

If you are looking for something more generic, here are some good options, which can found in your local grocery stores like Walmart, Kroger etc.

How to apply deep conditioning mask:

Shower as usual, using shampoo but not your usual conditioner. Our deep conditioner will be used in place of you regular conditioner. When you are done shampooing, apply the deep conditioner to your hair (read instructions on the box, some deep conditioners are for the length of hair only concentrating more on the tips, whereas others are for the entire hair scalp included). Now cover your strands with a shower cap or a hot towel, as directed on the conditioning mask. Wait for at least 15-20 minutes before rinsing out the mixture with cool water (not hot water). Make sure the product is completely rinsed out of your hair, then style as usual. This process can be time consuming so I keep the body wash, shaving my legs etc. for the end when this mask is in my hair to use the time in the shower better.

I also use a leave-in conditioner after towel drying my hair, for which L’Oreal has some good options to choose from.

Every 6-8 months, I also put a henna pack in my hair for deep conditioning and will share the recipe for that in a future post.

For oiling my hair, I usually mix a couple of different hair oils, heat it in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds and massage it into the hair and leave for atleast for 2-3 hours, overnight is the best, in my opinion. Here are some of my favorites:

Hope this post was helpful and you are all set to pamper yourself and your hair!! Put this on your weekend agenda, trust me, your mane will thank you… Have a great weekend!!
