~ My Pick: Top 10 Picnic Spots in Houston!

Today, April 12th 2018, marks the 2nd anniversary for my blog and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for continued reads, likes, comments, love and support!!

So today being a special day, I am sharing a special post – if you follow me on Instagram (nshrivas) you already know that we love being outdoors and doing picnics and so today, I am sharing top 10 picnic spots in and around Houston with you all…

Spring is officially here!!! While our friends on the east coast are still getting attacked by nasty snow storms, we in Houston are lucky! Our temperatures are nothing short of gorgeous sunny days!

The bluebonnets and azaleas are in full bloom all over Houston, which means it’s time to finally enjoy being outside after one of the coldest winters in the history of Texas!!

So what way to welcome spring that some outdoor picnicking. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:

1. Ray Miller Park

This isn’t a big one on the map, but super convenient for me and other residents on or around Eldridge Pkwy because it’s literally a stone throw away ( but don’t throw stones, you might hit someone, LOL!!). Here they have two place areas for the kiddos, BBQ grills and even cute gazebos and a bridge, perfect for a photoshoot. Often you’ll see bootcamp classes being held here as well. This is our go to choice for an evening stroll or a quick weekday picnic!

Location: 1800 Eldridge Pkwy, Houston, TX 77077.

2. Arthur Storey Park

Being located on the feeder of Beltway 8, just after the Bellaire Blvd. traffic light when coming from I-10, this one is a big park. We ourselves haven’t ever walked the entire park! Even though we personally haven’t done a picnic here, this is often our choice for an evening walk over the weekend. It has play areas, BBQ grills and picnic tables along with offering bike and hike trails and to top it all off a tai-chi court!

Location: 7400 W. Sam Houston Pkwy South, Houston, TX 77072.

3. Terry Hershey Park

Living on the west side of Houston has many advantages and one of them being beautiful parks that surround the area. And one of them being the beautiful Terry Hershey Park, along the Buffalo Bayou, that’s just 5 mins from our place! The bayou winds through the park with scenic bike and hiking trails abs the wild bluebonnets that adorn the trails are a bonus!! There are picnic tables and BBQ grills for those looking for a fun outdoor meal.

Location: 15200 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77079.

4. Bear Creek Park

This one has a petting zoo!!! Enough said! Along with walking trails it also has soccer fields, little league and softball fields, tennis courts and numerous picnic pavilions – perfect for large picnics as they are surrounded by hundreds of picnic tables and BBQ grills.

Location: Bear Creek Dr, Houston, TX 77084 or 3535 War Memorial Drive.

5. Hermann Park

This one is a family favorite – with the museums so close and the zoo in the same complex, you can’t go wrong choosing this location for your day out! Ideal for large group picnics or even birthday parties!

Hermann Park even offers a designated picnic area equipped with picnic tables, BBQ grills, swing sets, a boardwalk and fun trails to hike and ride your bike. Plus, Hermann Park also has a train you can ride around the park as well as boating in the lake. If that’s not it, the beautiful Japanese garden is perfect for photoshoots.

Location: 6001 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77030.

6. Miller Outdoor Theatre

Even though I haven’t ever been to a performance at the Miller Outdoor Theatre yet, this one is high on my list for summer 2018 as it is the perfect place to soak up the beautiful weather. With free performances from March through October, what’s not to like!!

Location: 6000 Hermann Park Dr, Houston, TX 77030.

7. Levy Park

This one is a newer park, and hence one I haven’t visited yet. But from I hear this one is a complete package with a splash pad, climbing walls and numerous jungle gyms, you and your family can enjoy an entire day at the park. Once the kids have worked up an appetite on the playground, bring a lunch and enjoy it on the Activity Lawn where there are numerous things to enjoy like table tennis, a mini-golf putting green even chairs and tables for those of you who forget to bring your blanket. And for your furry friends, there’s also a dog park.

Location: 3801 Eastside St, Houston, TX 77098.

8. Discovery Green

Even though we haven’t ever done a “picnic” here, it’s a welcome green space in the heart of downtown, with attractive art installations! The picnic lawn offers more than just picnic space, as it also includes dog runs, a playground and a mist tree, which is perfect for hot summer days! It offers kayaking during the summer months and ice skating in the winter time. Perfect for a little family day away at the park!

Location: 1500 McKinney St, Houston, TX 77010.

9. Waterwall Park!

If you work around the Galleria Area, this location provides for a wonderful mid work day escape during your lunch hour! The sound of rushing water from the 64-foot-U-shaped water fountain along with some sprinkles will lift your spirits even on the most Mondayest Monday!!

Location: 2800 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056.

10. Memorial Park

This one is in the heart of Houston, proving a quick retreat from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle that Houston is. Along with a golf course, the park also has facilities for tennis, softball, swimming, skating, volleyball, skating, cycling and also running!! Lots of picnic tables for a fun family day as well.

Location: 6501 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007.

~ Tips on how to stay refreshed this summer!!

Tuesday, June 20th 2017 is the 1st day of summer this year, even though Houston’s temperatures have been soaring high already! In all honesty, it’s still not that bad and often there is a nice cool breeze cooling things down. We’ve also been having way more rain than usual!

So with summer just around the corner, I thought of sharing some tips that help me keep refreshed during the brutal summer months here in Houston, for these tips, read on:

Drink up!!

Chilled water is my go-to choice during the summer, but it doesn’t have to be boring!! Spice it up with lemon wedges and mint leaves or for something different, here’s my ~ Detox Water… post that shares some yummy recipes to make your regular water interesting. I always carry a bottle of water with me when I am out and about to stay hydrated at all times, and I suggest you do too!!

My recent find at the grocery store (maybe I am late to this party) is Sparkling Flavored Water!! I’ve tried the Strawberry flavor as well as the Key Lime and they are both very refreshing especially for someone like me who does not drink alcohol and also tries to stay clear of soda.

Choose the right fabric to wear!!

Read cutesy dresses, flowy tops, shorts, skirts! Light flowy fabrics in cute prints and pastel shades is what my summer wardrobe is made of as comfort is key! The more breathable the fabric, the better.

I am loving the latest collection at Old Navy, Gap and even Ann Taylor / Loft has been a wonderful surprise since their clothes aren’t only constrained to work attire now! I’ll be doing another post soon on where I shop, so stay tuned!

Don’t forget your workout:

Being an outdoorsy person, preferring to work outdoors over the gym, this heat can challenge my dedication but I don’t give in. I take either early morning or late evening walks, sometimes both, because it’s the best time of the day to be outdoors during the summer. The fresh air is a welcome change!

On the weekends and usually once over the weekday, the hubby and I make our way to the pool for a refreshing dip. The water is still a tad bit cold for my liking, but it’s surely refreshing!! We are water babies and the swimming pool, a lake, the ocean are always calling our name. We often make our swim trips into BBQ dinners as well, and here are my recipes on what we BBQ: ~ Paneer Tikka! and ~ Chicken Tikka / Tandoori Chicken!!.

Eating the right fruits:

Tropical fruits are my go-tos during the summer! Even though now days all fruits are always available all year round, my summer favorites are Mangos, Watermelons, Strawberries, Bananas, Oranges and Apples.

Smoothies is also a good way to go, and here’s some recipes that you could try: ~ Smoothies!!

Get the right haircut / hairstyle:

Before the start of summer 2016, I colored my hair and also got a new hairstyle. This summer, I am due for a haircut, but I am definitely not chopping my hair off or coloring it! Instead just going for a trim and maybe some bangs.

If you are into coloring your hair, you’ll find these posts helpful: ~ Hair Coloring 101… and ~ Hair Conditioning 101….

Being a comfort chic, I usually throw my hair up in a bun and it’s not so sexy! LOL!! Currently pinteresting cute ways to throw my hair up in a bun, for more on what I find, follow me on Pinterest: Niti Shrivastava Shukla.

Hope you enjoyed today’s post and are all set to be refreshed and enjoy this summer!!
